"Wayside Notes: Sunset Route" by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, 1928. The pamphlet has an orange-bordered front cover image of a mission viewed through a belfry with a hooded priest-like figure holding a jar near a fountain. At the top is the title, while at the bottom is the name and logo of Southern Pacific Lines. The back cover has an image that appears to be the Grand Canyon with a body of water; the hint of a bridge; two cowboy-like figures on a cliff and desert-like environment. Sections of the pamphlet deal with the states along part of the route, which consisted of a steamship or rail route from New York to New Orleans and a rail route from New Orleans to Los Angeles. These states include Lousiana; Texas; New Mexico; Arizona; and California. Population and size of the states are followed by descriptions of towns and sights along the route, illustrated by black and white photographs. There is a section for the company's lines in Mexico, with description of stops from Nogales, Arizona to Guadalajara. The Los Angeles region has significant description and there are areas discussing lines heading to the central and northern parts of the state. At the rear is a map of the Southern Pacific's main lines in the country and a list of company representatives in cities throughout the United States and overseas. There are creases, some very small tears, light discoloration, and cover wear so the artifact is in fair condition.
