Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of the west side of Los Angeles Street between Commercial and Aliso Streets, ca. 1870s. Five commercial buildings line the street from left to right with the two-story Hellman Block structure at the far left. The building is ornate with many architectural elements and awnings. Next to this is the two-story M.W. Childs building which has a sign advertising plumbing, tin, and copper goods. The Barrows, Furrey & Co. saddlery is at the center and also has two floors. The one-story S. C. Foy saddlery is next to this. At the far right is the Hellman Market which is of brick and has two floors. Many barrels, crates, general farming equipment, and carriages are at the front of many of the businesses. Two brick buildings are in the center of the background to the west, with a furniture company and C. Ducommun Hardware at the left, and the St. Charles Hotel at the right. The structures occupied the east side of Main Street. On the bottom right corner of the back is the copyright stamp of the Security Pacific National Bank collection at the Los Angeles Public Library. The image is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
