Description

WEST WING OF LA CASA NUEVA, EL ENCANTO SANITARIUM Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of the swimming pool and reservoir at the Homestead, ca. 1942. Taken from the southeast corner of the pool, when the Homestead was the El Encanto Sanitarium, the image shows most of the pool with it filled with water. At left is part of a low pipe fence, with a curved pole light attached. Behind this is a glimpse, at the extreme left, of a very small portion of the wooden bleachers on the south side. At center across from the photographer are two sets of rooms, showers on the left and dressing areas on the right, with six compartments in each. Between them is a wooden gate like the other gates the Temple family installed around the property. Standing next to the pool at the right, in front of one set of rooms are four persons, identified as two nurses, at left, and Ken and Gene Brown, the oldest sons of the family who owned El Encanto. In the background left is the top section of the Water Tower, with the water tank missing [it was used as framing for the wall in the Workman House courtyard]. Some palm and oak trees form a dense throng of landscaping in the background right. The reverse has a pencil inscription by a former museum curator, reading, "late 1941 - early 42 / Ken B. on right / Gene on left, w/ / 2 nurses / showers on left, dressing rooms on right." An ink stamp at the bottom center reads "727." Aside from very light discoloration and surface soiling, the artifact is in good condition. Number-Units: 1
