WEST WING OF LA CASA NUEVA, EL ENCANTO SANITARIUM
Color: Black; White
A black and white photograph of the second floor west wing dormitory of La Casa Nueva, ca. 1942. Taken from the south side of the room, when it was used as part of the El Encanto Sanitarium, the image shows rows of beds along the windows with a center aisle lined with a long runner between the beds. Dressers are in between each bed. At the north end of the room are two tables, at which sit seven older men, inhabitants of the dormitory, appearing to be eating a meal, probably lunch. Two nurses, in uniform, stand along a wall, behind which is a bathroom and shower. In the background behind the nurses is the window leading to Agnes Temple's bedroom. On the reverse upper right is a penciled inscription by a former museum curator, "Brown," meaning the family that owned El Encanto when the photo was taken. At the lower left is the pencil inscription "ca. 1941-42." A stamp reading "42," is at the lower right. With some surface soiling, very light discoloration, and a reddish stain at the reverse upper left, the photo is in fair condition.
