A portrait of "Mr. Hammel", 1870s. The image shows either the merchant and physician William A. Hammel, Sr. or United States Hotel owner Henry Hammel in a head-and-shoulder view. At the bottom in pencil is "Mr. Hammel," while an ink inscription on the reverse reads "Mrs. Hammel." A maker's mark on the reverse reads in part "Photographic / Parlors. / Downey Block / 65 Main Street / Los Angeles, Cal." and the work may have been that of Francis Parker, who ran the Parker and Company studio there. With slight curving of the mount and minor edge wear, the condition is good.
