Description

WILLIAM H. AND MARIA BOYLE WORKMAN HOUSE, BOYLE HEIGHTS Color: Black; White A reproduction black and white photograph of the home of Maria Boyle and William H. Workman, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, ca. 1890. The wood clapboard house has much ornamentation, including a covered porch with a decorative wood-grille rail above it and long brackets at the cornice below the rooflines. There is a baywindow at the side facing the camera, and, behind the house, is a smaller structure, looking to be one-story with an attic and a projecting bay window on the camera side. Though said to be the Boyle House, seen in item .21, a glance at that image readily shows that the roof line in this view is too steep to be that of the Boyle home. In the foreground is a grass lawn, with sprinklers, a sidewalk, and planting beds with a variety of bushes, shrubs, and trees. More of the same is at the far left, as well. The house, built in 1887, was owned by a newphew of William Workman and his wife, who inherited the land from her father, Andrew Boyle. Boyle Heights was a community subdivided around this structure by William H. Workman in 1876. As a newly produced photograph, the artifact is in mint condition. Number-Units: 1
