Description

WILLIAM H. WORKMAN AND E.L. ERIE RIDING THE FIRST CAR IN LOS ANGELES, 1895 Color: Black; White A black and white reproduction photograph of William H. Workman and builder E.L. Erie on the first car in Los Angeles in 1895. According to an accompanying description (see below), the site was Fifth and Cummings streets near Hollenback Park in East Los Angeles. Shown is a box-shaped, four wheeled vehicle with a platform at the center, which contained the engine below and the carriage-like seating compartment above. Mr. Erie, looking ahead, sits in the driver's seat with his right hand gripping the gear shift and his left hand holding the steering rod. Workman sits in the passenger seat behind Erie with his hands on his thighs and looking at the camera. There is an unoccupied back seat facing the rear of the vehicle. In the background can be seen trees and to the right a portion of a rail line. The photo is in good condition with the corners curved and a stain from the tape on the top. The typed description has been removed from the photo and reads, "The first Automobile in Los Angeles, pictured in 1895 in front of the/home of the builder, Mr. E.L. Erie, at Fifth & Cummings Streets,/near Hollenbeck Park. The passenger is William H. Workman, pioneer,/developer of Boyle Heights, and Mayor of Los Angeles in 1887-1888."
