Description

Color: Black; White A copy of a black and white engraved photograph with two duplicates of William Workman, ca. 1870. The image is a studio portrait of Workman in a head-and-torso shot. He wears a dark-colored suit with darker collar trim on the coat and a lapeled vest. He has a white shirt, turned up at the collar, and around it is a black cravat or tie. Though his hair remains dark-colored, wrinkles and a drawn look of his skin indicate the estimated year. The background is gray and the appearance of the image there and on the clothing indicate the engraving, which was used in a 1921 history of southern California. At the bottom of one copy is Workman's signature. On the reverse top of one copy are two inscriptions, in pencil by the hand of a former museum curator. At left is "'Don Julian' William Workman" and at right is "Source: The Workman and Temple Family Homestead Museum Archives. Below this latter is the partially erased inscription "200/" while another small inscription under this, also by the former museum curator, is not clear--it reads "(pulicate print)" but may have been intended to say "(duplicate print.)" Another copy has at the center, again in the former museum curator's hand, "Return Photo to: Workman and Temple Homestead . . ." with the museum's address given. At the bottom left by the same person in pencil is "William (Don Julian) Workman / courtesy of [donor's name withheld]." In good condition, the object has little indication of wear or damage.
