Description

"Willow Dale Press," Vol. 1, No. 1, January 1879. The issue, the first of the first newspaper published in the San Gabriel Valley, was created by Annetta and Arthur Carter, whose family resided at Willow Dale Ranch in present San Marino, California, though the masthead gives the location as San Gabriel. The item was included in a 1975 book on the press, which is in the museum's Research Library. It has some humor, material for children, and the like, as well as three advertisements for a doctor, the San Gabriel Semi-Tropical Nursery, and Cogswell's Sierra Madre Villa Hotel. The Carters' father, A. N. Carter, was later the founder of the town of Sierra Madre, California. With some edge tears, folds, creases, and general fragility, the condition is good.
