Color: Brown
A woman's beige silk jacket, ca. 1890s. The outer layer is a thin mesh-like fabric and there is an inner layer of silk. Patterning on the main section of the piece consists of two-inch bands running from the shoulder to the hemline on either side of the closing. The pattern within consists of sprigs of leaves joined by circular pierced holes. Within pairs of these are designs that appear almost as Asian-influenced medallions. These patterns are also on the cuffs in two bands; at the collar in one band; and at the back in three bands. Throughout the rest of the mesh-like fabric on the main portion and the sleeves are quarter-inch thick fabric dots interspersed throughout in no particular order. The closing consists of nine sets of clasps and hooks with three other sets on the collar. An inch-thick hemline with a couple of inches of thin silk is at the bottom of the piece. Though there are stains on the back of the piece on the mesh, the main damage consists of pest holes, shattering, and tears on the silk lining, especially at the sleeve holes. Therefore, the artifact is in fair condition.
