Description

Color: Brown A woman's beige silk jacket, ca. 1890s. The outer layer is a thin mesh-like fabric and there is an inner layer of silk. Patterning on the main section of the piece consists of vertical lines about a quarter of an inch thick with lines half as thick in between. Mesh-like fabric ornamented with a design of no discernible character and without the silk lining makes up the collar. Vertical lines, such as those found on the main portion of the piece, are on the sleeves, but they also have horizontal lines stitched on top of the outer layer at four places and feature an embroidered mesh design like that found on the collar. The end of the cuff has the same design, but has more of a curved end ruffle to it. The closing consists entirely of hooks and clasps and there are two hooks at the lower end of the front on strips of fabric sewed on to the mesh layer of the garment. Strips of cotton with shjarp triangular designs on the end are on the lower edge of the piece. Six ruffle-like vertical lines of embroidery are on the back along with the vertical lines found on the front. With several tears on the silk lining; loose threads, especially at the lower section; and some stains, including two heavily soiled areas on the left sleeve, the artifact is in fair condition.
