Description

WOMAN'S LIGHT COTTON GARMENT, POSSIBLY A NIGHTSHIRT Color: White A woman's cotton garment, possibly a nightshirt, ca. 1900. The garment is very thin cotton with thin vertically stitched lines at the closing flap; top of the shoulders and sleeves and similar lines horizontally stitched on the sleeve cuffs. There is much embroidered work on the front, consisting of bordered areas with floral designs on the closing flap; an area of curved fan-like designs attached on one part to a seam at the left of the closing flap as well as at the top of the flap and under it at right; two vertical sections of floral designs with pierced holes in each of the buds to the left of the flap and under it at the right; and floral patterns on the cuffs and collar. The back consists of five groups of five vertical stitched lines and does not have embroidery work at all. There are several areas of dark brown discoloration or staining; tears at the underarms and part of the embroidered border at the top of the closing flap torn loose, so the artifact is in fair condition.
