Description

WOMAN'S STRIPED BLOUSE WITH EMBROIDERED COLLAR, SHOULDER AND CUFFS Color: White A woman's cotton blouse with a striped design and embroidered collar, shoulder and cuff designs, ca. 1890s. The piece has a a high collar and the back hangs lower than the front. There are a series of vertical stripes sewed as bands onto the fabric. Interspersed throughout the garment are small unornamented dots. At the sleeve cuffs, collar, and shoulders are sections of embroidered work, featuring designs like medallions, circular figures, four-petaled flowers and various sizes of cut-work at the cuffs and shoulders. The work on the collar is a band of cut-work with no designs. Toward the lower part of the front near the hem are stitched-in bands of plain cotton with gathering ties extending about eighteen inches out. These are designed to be pulled to the back of the garment and tied to tighten the garment around the waist. At the lower left front inside, there is a small cotton tag with the initials "M. W." in red lettering. It is assumed this is Mary [Julia] Workman, daughter of William Henry Workman and grandniece of William Workman. Aside from a small stain on the left side of the front, stains in the underarms, one of which has a few small tears at the seam and some loose threads, the garment is in good condition.
