Description

WOMAN'S WHITE FULL-LENGTH MULTI-LAYERED SUMMER DRESS Color: White A woman's white full-length multi-layered summer dress, ca. 1900. The artifact has a narrow waist, but widens considerably at the bottom. There is very intricate embroidery and cut-work on the piece, with the main motif being the embroidered and cut curled circular designs popular at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. These are found at the collar; the upper sleeve cuffs; the sides; and the three hemlines. Around each as well are embroidered linked flower and leaf designs, while at the two lowest hemlines are embroidered vines at the top of the curled patterns. Cut-work designs include vines and leaves at the waist two sections of the inner sleeves and the first hemline; half-circles with multi-petaled flowers at the front, shoulder, collar, and sleeve cuffs; and pairs of diamonds in the front. From the waist upward, the closing consists of buttons, while from the waist down they are clasps and hooks. Although heavily wrinkled and with a few small stains, the artifact is largely in good condition.
