Description

Color: Brown A wood gouge used in the manufacture of furniture, ca. 1900. The piece has a thick half-curved blade 4 3/4" inches long and 1" wide which tapers to a thinner point toward the handle. Pressed into the metal at this thinner section are the words "W. BUTCHER / CAST STEEL." The blade is connected to the wood handle with a brass fitting. The handle has an hourglass-like appearance with the end thicker than the middle and slightly thicker to the end joined at the blade. There are pairs of two lines at various points at the handle, evidently for decorative effect. There are many scratches and chips as well as surface soiling in the handle and significant corrosion and rust on the brass fitting and the blade, so the item is in fair condition.
