Description

Color: Brown A wood shaping plane used in the manufacture of furniture, ca. 1900. The piece has a thick section of wood, though not as heavy and thick as the other planes in this accession. Inserted through the wood at a 45-degree angle and exposed on one side is the wood handle and steel chisel, which emerges through the bottom and the curved-edge chisel blade extending just past the edge of the wood guide. Where the handle and chisel are exposed is a depression made in the wood, almost as if where the thumb is positioned, though it's purpose is not known. Pressed into the wood at six places is the owner's name "H. KOCH," though there is no manufacturer's name as with the other pieces, nor an indication of the fractional width of the planing done by the tool. There are many scratches and chips as well as surface soiling on the wood and significant corrosion and rust on the blade, so the item is in fair condition.
