Description

WOODEN BOX WITH TEMPLE/WORKMAN CATTLE BRAND PANEL Color: Black, brown, red, white A wooden box (a) with a plate bearing the cattle brands of the Temple and Workman families and Mission San Gabriel on a plate on the lid, ca. 1930-1970. The box, once owned by Thomas W. Temple II is of stained wood with two gold metal hinges fastened with dark-colored rivets on the left, no clasp, and a band of gold pierced metal with gold pointed studs that wraps around all four sides. The plate, fastened on the lid with screws held by nuts, is shaped like a shield from a coat-of-arms bordered in silver. At the top in silver block letters over a creme-colored field is: "TEMPLE WORKMAN." There are five fields--a smaller one in the center has a silver background and the Mission San Gabriel cattle brand in black over the field. The first and fourth (top left and bottom right) fields are white in background with the cattle brands of F. P. F. Temple and William Workman, respectively, in black with silver borders. The second and third (top right and bottom left) fields are red with the cattle brands of Jonathan Temple and William Workman's counterbrand in black with silver borders. Inside is item b), a rectangular shaped metal stamp with the impression of the letter "T." With some of the stain worn away and nicks and scratches in the wood, the box is otherwise in good condition, as is the stamp.
