Description

WORKERS IN A FIELD, WILLIAM H. WORKMAN RANCH, BOYLE HEIGHTS Color: Black; White A reproduction black and white photograph of agricultural laborers in a field on the ranch of William H. Workman, Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, unknown date. The group a dozen men, one of which holds a young child on his shoulders, at center, hold digging poles. Around them, the field looks newly cleared and there are small wooden sticks, perhaps markers. At left are some buckets and other implements. At left is a low rail fence, indicating perhaps that a road lies on the other side of it. In the background is a grove of tall trees, probably eucalyptus, appearing to line another road. Other fields and a few houses are notable at the far right and left background. It is probable that the field was a vineyard, though this is not definitely known. Workman, a nephew of William Workman, inherited the land, through his wife's father, Andrew Boyle. Boyle Heights was a subdivision started by Workman in 1876. As a newly produced photograph, the artifact is in mint condition. Number-Units: 2
