WORKMAN FAMILY TOMBSTONE DRAWINGEntry/Object ID
97.23.1.1Description
A black pen drawing on silk of the Workman family tombstone at St. Cuthbert's churchyard, Clifton, England, done by Mary Workman (1808-1868), ca. 1851. The rectangular piece of silk with corner cuts or folds has the tombstone at center. There is a cross at the head with a square stone below it inscribed with an unidentified biblical phrase. There is a fence around the stone. At the lower left and right is an inscription. The silk piece is mounted on paper and framed by embossed British symbols (thistle, rose, shamrock, crown, portcullis) and marked "Dobbs" at lower left. The drawing is mounted under glass in a simple dark brown wood frame (ca. 1910). This is evidently a sketch of the stone erected by William Workman on his return to England in 1851. The piece is in fair condition with a hole at upper center left and small stains throughout. A typed description is on file. Inscription left: "Erected by my dear Brother WILLIAM/ In Clifton Churchyard/County Westmorland." Inscription right: "IN HONOUR of his DECEACED/Relatives." The stone reads, in part, "Sacred/TO THE MEMORY of/THOMAS WORKMAN/WHO DIED AT Clifton MARCH 19, 1843/AGED 77/ALSO OF LUCY WORKMAN his WIFE/WHO ALSO DIED AT Clifton october 30, 1830,/AGED 59. . ."
