Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of the auditorium and dining hall at the Workman Homestead, July 1921. Taken from the east driveway, the buildings are at the center and right. The larger auditorium has a tall gabled roof; entrance at the east side with double doors, sidelights, and a fan light; two square windows on the east side; a lamp sconce over the entrance; a vent just below the roof's apex; and, on the partially-seen north side, two windows. Near one of these latter, a man is doing work. A ladder is propped up against the eastern wall at the south side. The smaller dining hall has a similar appearance, but the windows on the east side are much closer to the double doors. At left is a concrete planter with a palm tree newly planted. A wheelbarrow stands near this planter, while a pile of dirt in the roadway appears to be to fill in and grade the road level. At right foreground is a wire fence, which extended around the Workman House and Water Tower, off-camera to the right. Within the fence are small trees, shrubs and bushes. Between this planter and the auditorium is a black soft-top sedan, which seems to be empty. On the reverse is a large stamp reading: "COMPLIMENTS OF / METRO PICTURES CORP. / LOU STROHM, / LOCATION MANAGER / JUL 1921." Next to this, in the hand of a former museum curator, is the penciled inscription "Brown," the family which owned the Homestead from 1940 to the 1960s and donors of the image. There are ink stains at the bottom of the front; pin holes at the top corners; and minor surface soiling on the reverse, so the artifact is in fair condition. Number-Units: 1
