Description

Color: Black; White A black and white photograph of the Workman Homestead from the southwest, ca. 1924. The photographer, possibly Thomas W. Temple II, stood in the plowed field directly south of La Casa Nueva, which is at left, and partially constructed with only rough plastering; the tile roof not installed; and other details yet to be completed. Only the lower portions of the Mission Walkway are visible, as well. At foreground left is an adobe kiln, used to fire the bricks for the La Casa Nueva and Mission Walkway projects. At center is a portion of the Workman House, including much of a greenhouse in the courtyard. At right center and toward the edge are three outbuildings, including the auditorium, dining hall, and garage--all formerly wineries of the Workman family. Above the roof of the auditorium is the top of the Water Tower roof and the flagpole. The field in the foreground has some trees planted in it that are identified as walnut trees. This inscription reads "Walnut trees just planted in foreground, / Temple House being constructed" and was made by a former museum curator. At the upper right by the same hand is the name "Brown," this being the family which occupied the Homestead after 1940 and donated the image to the museum. There are some stains on the reverse and surface soiling, so the artifact is in fair condition. Number-Units: 1
