Description
WORKMAN HOUSE BASEMENT ADOBE WALL SHAVING FOR FOOTING WORK
Color: Brown
A color photograph of the shaving of the south adobe support wall in the Workman House basement, 23 May 1977. Done so that a concrete footing and retaining wall could be installed to support the adobe wall, two workers are using shovels and other tools to dig a pit in the floor and shave off the adobe. One worker, at left, is shaving the wall, while the other, at right, points toward the other. At left is a section of the wall with brick at the top and pieces of lath and plaster at the bottom. To the right is the eastern section of the basement. Wood support posts; floor joists in the ceiling; and large black metal plumbing pipes are visible, as is one lightbulb. Next to the man at right is a section of concrete block retaining wall, probably recently installed and an example of what was to be done in the work underway. An inscription at the bottom of the reverse in black ink reads "Shaving Adobe Wall for footing & block wall." At the upper left in pencil by a former museum curator is the inscription, "Source: Bill Kalnoski." With little indication of wear or damage, the artifact is in good condition.
