2004.413.1.4Description
A postcard in color "Ye Alpine Tavern" Mt. Lowe Cal, ca. 1910s. In view is presumably tourists and, or hotel guests standing in front of the Ye Alpine Tavern in Mt. Lowe. The hotel and tourist attraction once stood "5,000 feet above sea," as shown on the bottom, left of the card. It was situated on Mt. Lowe in the San Gabriel Mountains. The hotel was in business from 1895 to 1936 and is said to have provided lodging for over 3 million people before burning down and permanently ceasing operation. Today, a historical marker is all that is left to show the location of the once thriving hotel and its surroundings are still visited by people hiking its trails. On the reverse side is space for a correspondence as well as an address. The postcard was published by Pacific Novelty Co., San Francisco and Los Angeles. It is in good condition despite the abrasion damage, light surface soiling, discoloration, stains.Lexicon
