‘Fresia’ is an abstract acrylic painting. I began this work by creating a watercolour still-life of a stalk of fresia. I converted the work to a digital image and deleted lines of code from the file until I arrived at the final composition. I reproduced the glitched image as closely as possible with acrylic paint. All information we collect through our senses is interpreted and fundamentally changed by our brains. Machine-generated images undergo a similar process of essential change through the computer’s conversion of raw data into light that we see on our screens. Through the iterative process of creating this work, we can sense the distinction between how a machine interprets an image as compared to the human brain. This back-and-forth process creates a unique melding that explores how these unnoticed interpretation inaccuracies change how we experience the world.Collection
