This nine-foot tall, beautifully rendered steel sculpture is inspired by the myth of Persephone, the ancient Greek goddess of spring. Abducted and taken to the underworld for six months out of the year by Hades, her mother Demeter’s mourning for her yearly absence from the world of the living was believed to be the cause of winter. The figure’s wings are more similar to those of a bat than a bird, the sharp angles of the wings merging seamlessly into the natural curves of the human body and accentuating the pose that evokes rebirth, rising from the ashes, creating a duality of human and animal, life and death that evokes the goddess’ dualistic nature. The finish of the piece takes on different appearances depending on the weather and time of year, which also calls upon the mythological association of Persephone with the changing seasons.Artwork Details
