Description

"What makes an object art? This piece, created by Vancouver-based artist Ben Skinner, invites viewers to consider this question. Comprised of 2,698 pencils in 58 unique shades arranged in a diagonal spectrum atop a low table, The Colour Field appropriates the instruments of art, incorporating the pencils used to make art into an art object themselves. The strategy to reposition everyday objects is a foundational tenet of modern art history and traces its roots to artist Marcel Duchamp and his iconic ""readymades"". Skinner continues to move this conversation forward with works like The Colour Field. The rainbow of hues is enhanced by the flat grey of the platform, an achromatic colour that is the combination of the three primary colours of red, blue and yellow mixed at equal ratios."
