‘Lost at Sea’ is a three-dimensional acrylic abstract painting based on JMW Turner’s 1796 piece ‘Fishermen at Sea’. As a pioneer of the romantic style, Turner’s painting is loose, emotional, and spacious. I created this painting to push the boundaries of the romantic style into complete abstraction. I aimed to capture the sense of space and drama of ‘Fishermen at Sea’ using only texture and colour. I imagine this painting to abstractly depict the moment after Turner’s fishermen are swallowed up by the roiling sea. Like the original painting, ‘Lost as Sea’ speaks to the smallness of humanity in comparison to the vastness of the natural world.Artwork Details
