Description

This is a handwoven petate or sleeping mat constructed from flattened, dried palm fronds. The mat is rectangular in shape with tightly plaited straw forming a zigzag herringbone pattern. Bands of dyed fiber in shades of purple, magenta, green, and turquoise form chevron motifs across the surface, creating decorative diagonal accents against the natural beige palm background. The ends are slightly rolled from use or storage, and the mat has a flexible, durable feel typical of functional palm weavings.
