2022.02.009Description
This is a long, narrow woven belt (faja) created with a warp-faced technique on a backstrap loom. The foundation is a tightly woven commercial white cotton ground, serving as the base for vivid brocade patterning in green, dark purple, orange, orange, and blue. The design includes repeated geometric motifs arranged in vertical bands, bordered by narrow, alternating color stripes. These repeated elements create a balanced, symmetrical composition along the entire length of the belt. The ends of the belt are finished with loose warp threads in multicolor strands. These warp ends are left unbraided or untwisted but were likely intended to be plaited or twisted by the wearer for practical or aesthetic use.Ethnography
