This is a classic black cotton rebozo featuring a plain weave structure and subtle ikat-dyed patterning in white. The textile was likely woven on a commercial upright loom—possibly mechanized—resulting in a uniform weave that emphasizes practical use and affordability. The design features evenly spaced, horizontally aligned white dashed patterns across the warp, produced by tying and dyeing the threads prior to weaving (ikat technique).
The ends of the rebozo transition into finely woven empuntado sections using a basketweave-like technique that forms a tight, textured panel above the fringe. Below this, the warp threads have been loosely twisted into decorative tassels, completing the textile with both function and style. Though simple in design compared to more elaborate ikat rebozos, this piece remains highly representative of the foundational styles worn throughout Mexico.Ethnography
