Nahua child's wrap-around skirtEntry/Object ID
2022.02.011Description
This small wrap-around skirt (falda) is woven from handspun natural white wool on a backstrap loom. It is constructed as a single panel (one lienzo) with four complete selvages, indicating the piece was finished on the loom without need for hemming. The ground weave is a plain weave structure with a soft, slightly uneven surface characteristic of handspun wool. The decorative stripes along the warp include commercial wool and cotton yarns in vibrant colors—primarily deep red, orange, yellow, and green—creating bold visual contrast against the cream background. Narrow bands of green and yellow mark the outer edge, while a wider central section features alternating red and orange warp stripes. Small, scattered traces of pink pigment appear faintly on the white wool portion, suggesting incidental staining or possible previous ritual use.Ethnography
