Purépecha/Mestizo rebozo - shawlEntry/Object ID
2022.02.014Description
This rebozo is a long, rectangular shawl woven on a commercial textile machine using cotton thread in a plain weave structure. The predominant color is black, interspersed with narrow vertical warp stripes in light blue and purple, spaced evenly along the length of the textile. Each end terminates in finely knotted and loosely plaited fringe formed by the warp threads, creating an intricate lattice-like design typical of traditional "puntas."
The fabric is soft and flexible, with a smooth surface that indicates machine processing but retains the artisanal style emblematic of Michoacán’s regional rebozos. The warp-faced stripes add vibrancy to the otherwise dark base, and the hand-tied fringe work reflects a continuation of traditional finishing techniques despite the machine-made body.Ethnography
