Mestizo rebozo - shawlEntry/Object ID
2024.02.032Description
This rebozo is an elegant example of a contemporary mestizo shawl created in the town of Tenancingo, well known for its ikat-dyed textiles. It is woven from fine commercial cotton, dyed in a black and white ikat pattern that creates rhythmic sequences of blurred dots and lines across the length of the textile. The rebozo is finished at both ends with hand-knotted macramé fringe in black and white, showcasing diamond-like patterns in tightly knotted warp threads and loose hanging fringe. The edges are machine-hemmed, and the width of the piece reflects the standard limitation of the backstrap loom on which it was woven.Ethnography
