Description

Huipil (blouse). Woven on backstrap loom from hand-spun cotton. Three webs of plain weave cotton sewn together with a catch stitching in maroon wool thread. The central web is twice the width of the sleeve webs, and has a small square neck opening. A brocade with geometric designs adorns the top section of each web--the central web thrice as long as the sleeves-- and extends from the front to the back. Although predominantly maroon, the brocade also has yarns in burnt orange, light gray, marigold yellow, and greenish-brown. The yarns are probably all handspun and colored with vegetable dyes. This huipil has elements that coincide with the traditional ‘huipil ceremonial of Magdalens, Chiapas.’ It is possibly a modern version of a ceremonial huipil. For Maya designs and symbolism in the huipil, refer to Notes.
