Description

Tzotzil bag. Cotton canvas bag with brocaded rows of geometric designs, twisted fringe on half its top opening edge, and a very thin, long shoulder strap. The bag is created from one single fabric piece folded in half and hand sewn at the sides. The side stitching thread colors are different on each side (pink and yellow on one side, pink, blue and orange on the other) and alternate between its colors to create a striped effect. The rows of brocaded designs decorate both sides of the bag and depict the Maya ‘Grand Design’ diamonds, butterflies, snakes, representational figures and floral motifs. They are different on each side and are achieved through supplementary weft patterning. They are mostly done in dark red, but also have deep oxford blue, and small bits of near-neon yellow, pink, orange, blue and green. The bag has a thin, twisted yarn strap in green and white. One side of the top opening has knotted twisted fringes and can be folded over to form a sort of flap. For more specific Mayan symbol placement and information, see Notes.
