This Tzotzil Maya woman’s blouse is constructed from fine, cream-colored cotton manta and features elaborate surface treatment achieved through intense pleating and dense embroidery. The front yoke and sleeves are embroidered over deep vertical pleats using vibrant purple cotton thread. This embroidery technique—often referred to as “hyper” embroidery—is stitched into every pleat, creating a tactile, high-relief texture across the upper portion of the garment. The embroidery reinforces the structure while also creating a shimmering surface of tight, repeated patterns.
The back of the blouse features a similar level of construction detail. While the central yoke panel is left plain, it is outlined by horizontal bands of purple embroidery across the shoulder line and back seams, visually connecting it to the front. The gathered skirt below the yoke extends into a rounded hem, offering fullness and ease of movement. Short sleeves and side pockets are edged with matching purple stitching. The neckline has a keyhole front with small buttons and a narrow-embroidered trim.
This blouse's lightweight construction and breathable manta fabric make it ideal for daily wear in the highland sun, while the embroidery and pleating add decorative flair and cultural identity.Ethnography
