Description

This hand-woven textile piece, titled "Virgen Natividad", depicts stylized, religious iconography of the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child, surrounded by intricate geometric patterns, floral motifs, two cherubs, and four birds.The piece features a dark green and (discolored) white color scheme, with a distinctive red embroidered border along the bottom edge. The craftsmanship of the textile was possibly created through weaving or cross-stitch.

Notes

Women in Coacuila are known throughout the Sierra de Puebla for their large, bold blouse yoke designs. Main themes are religious, fish, floral, and cowboys. Embroidery is with a 6in. needle with the under-over counted thread technique. No pattern is used. Sleeves have smaller geometric motifs. These are especilly good expamples.
