Engravings from "Histoire Generale des Ceremonies", Benard Picart. Engraving on paper. Amsterdam, Holland. 1720-1730. One view on one sheet. Titled, "Maniere Dont les Petres Caribes Souflent le Courage". (Translation, "Manner in which Carib priests inspire courage".) Depicts a ceremonial dance; villagers dancing in a circle, surrounding three men in feathered costumes, with elongated, twisted smoke pipes, and holding rattles; nude dancers are partly clothed with feather fans behind them. Ceremony taking place inside a large, arched, barrack; palm trees, and mountains shown through arched doorway.
