Description

Engravings from "Histoire Generale des Ceremonies", Benard Picart. Amsterdam, Holland. 1720-1730. Two views on one sheet. Top view titled, "Mariage des Indiens du Panama". Depicts villagers with small amount of clothing inside a barrack; large hammock hanging to one side; three women have veils over their faces; men with axes, bows and arrows, pipes; women carrying or pouring grain into baskets; baskets and bags of fruit and vegetables on the floor; doorway shows villagers outside chopping wood with axes; few bare trees. Bottom view titled, "Les Parens et les Amis Defrichant la Terre qui est destinee aux Nouneaux maries". Depicts villagers chopping large trees with axes, few men drinking from gourd jugs, few digging ground with hand shovels; others planting seeds by a corn field; large barrack and mountains in the background.
