Description

Engravings from "Histoire générale des cérémonies, mœurs, et coutumes religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde", Benard Picart. Engraving on paper. Amsterdam, Holland. 1720-1730. Engraving of a circular calendar. Title on top of circle, "Siecle Des Mexiqains". Title inside of innermost circle, "Annee des Mexiqains". This seems to be an engraving of a calendar. It is circular, with and outer border in the form of a snake. Its head and tail are at the top. At the top and bottom, and on both sides (directly opposite from each other) are loops going all the way around the circle. There are four symbols, shich are repeated. In the next circle is writing. Four words are repeated, each word with a period after it. The next circle is divided into six sections, with three symbols in each. The symbols are numbered from one to eighteen. The next circle is divided into six sections also, with what appear to be different phases of the moon at different places. The innermost circle, (the center) has written, "Annee des Mexiquains" and has different pictures in it. This calendar is on the top half of the engraving. The bottom half is writing. It seems to be an explanation of the calendar. It is divided into two columns by a double line. On the right side is a triangular-shaped arrangement of small circles. The is one sentence written across the bottom of the explanation.
