Description

Engravings from "Histoire Generale des Ceremonies", Benard Picart. Amsterdam, Holland. 1720-1730. Four views on one sheet. Top left view titled, "Vitzliputsli". (Translation, "Vitzliputsli".) Depicts a platform with many objects on the front of it: a bow, arrows, dagger, a medal or symbol, chains draped across, a type of club, something which appears to be an arrow or spear carrier. On top of the platform is a globe-shaped object with large sticks going through it horizontally on in front and one in the back. These are attached (close to the globe, with cross bars.) On top of the globe sits a figure of a man. He holds a shield with four spears protruding from it and a design of four leaves in a cross shape on the front. He holds a snake-shaped dagger in his right hand. Around his neck hangs an emblem or symbol on a chain. He has on a cape attached at the neck. He wears a headdress which is in the shape of a bird. Behind this platform are curtains. Top right view titled, "Tlaloch, ou Tescalipuca". (Translation, "Tlaloch or Tescalipua".) Depicts a platform with four objects and a chain on its front. On it sits a human figure in a chair. He wears a skirt, large emblem on a chain around his neck, and a headdress with four feathers. He wears armbands. In his right hand he holds four spears. In his left hand he holds a shield on a handle. Curtains hang around the platform. On the wall behind him hangs a bird figure on a stand, chains, a shield, and various other objects. Bottom left view titled, "Tescalipua Represente d'une Autre Facon". (Translation, "Tescalipuca Represented in Another Way".) Depicts a platform with a man-figure sitting on a chair. He wears a skirt, a cape, large earrings, and armband, and a large emblem. In his left hand he holds a shield with a design of four leaves and four spears protruding from it. In his right hand he holds an arrow. On both sides of him are skulls and crossbones hanging in vertical rows. Behind him on the wall are several objects: chains, spears, a shield, two daggers, a spear (or arrow) carrier. Bottom right view titled, "Pretres Mexicains". (Translation, "Mexican Priests".) Depicts two people standing on an alternately block and white tile floor. A railing is visible in the background. On the left is a man in sandals, a skirt, a cape with an elaborate hook at the neck, an earring, and a headdress. In his right hand he holds a knife over a platform with stains running down the front of it. His left hand is pointing to the sky. On the left is a woman in a dress and sandals. She wears an earring. Her hair is curly and gathered into a ponytail in back. Her hands and arms are away from her body with her index fingers pointing downward. The two people appear to be talking.
