Engravings from "Histoire Generale des Ceremonies", Benard Picart. Amsterdam, Holland. 1720-1730. Two views on one sheet. Top view titled, "Rejouissances des Peuples du Canada, Pendant que l'on Porte le Defunt, a la Cabanc des Morts". (Translation, "Rejoicing of the People of Canada While the Deceased is Carried to the Cabin of the Dead". ) Depicts a feast of celebration; large groups of villagers eating, dancing, seated, and cooking animals above fire; two villagers carrying a coffin; background depicts large barracks and trees. Bottom view titled, "Convol Funebre des Peuples du Canada". (Translation, "Funeral Procession of the Peoples of Canada".) Depicts a festive funeral; villagers in a single line carrying food, objects, and vessels; followers are dancing; four villagers carrying a coffin; four poles for coffin to be placed; background with mountains and large trees.
