Description

Engravings from "Histoire Generale des Ceremonies", Benard Picart. Amsterdam, Holland. 1720-1730. Two views on one sheet. Top view titled, "Kiwasa Idole des Virginiens". (Translation, "Kiwasa Idol of the Virginians".) Depicts single male figure in a meditating position; inside large domed tent; appears to be constructed of bamboo or straw fibers; figure seated on triple platform, he is wearing beads, tassled apron, zig-zag leg wrappers and full body tights. Bottom view titled, "Le Dieu des Vents, Autre Idole des Virginiens'". (Translation, "The God of the Winds, Another Idol of the Virginians".) Depicts female figure standing on a high square platform, inside high-pointed tent; woman holding an arrow in her mouth; two circular objects with fans, headstone, scarf, and bell on her hands; chain-link necklace, headdress, and two layered clothing; tent appears to be constructed of straw or bamboo fibers.
