Description

Engravings from "Histoire Generale des Ceremonies", Benard Picart. Amsterdam, Holland. 1720-1730. Four views on one sheet. Upper left view titled, "Sauvage Qui Alume une Alumette, Pour Aller Trouver sa Maitresse." (Translation, "Savage Who Lights a Match to Go Find His Mistress".) Depicts a figure covered with a sheet, and is squatting down by a small fire, turning on a piece of wood; door slightly open to his left. Upper right view titled, "Sauvage En Conversation Avec Sa Maitresse Etant Assis Sur la Pied de Son Lit". (Translation, "Savage In Conversation With His Mistress, Being Seated at the Foot of Her Bed".) Depicts a woman lying down, covered with sheets; exposing her breasts to a male figure, partially covered in sheets; seated on her bed. Bottom left view titled, "Sauvage Dont la Maitresse Se Cache Dans Sa Couverture Ne Voulant Pas le Recevoir". (Translation, "Savage Whose Mistress Hides Under the Cover Not Wanting to Receive Him".) Depicts woman, lying down, covered with sheets; her breasts exposed; standing male figure between two doors; he holds a lit piece of wood. Bottom right view titled, "Sauvage Dont la Maitresse Etent L'Alumette Pour le Recevoir". (Translation, "Savage Whose Mistress Extinguishes the Light to Recieve Him".) Depicts two figures, partially covered with sheets; male holds a lit piece of wood; woman is seated on the bed, blowing out the lit wood.
