Description

Huipil (blouse). Square neck white cotton blouse with colorful hand embroidery and white lace trims. Around the neckline and along the bottom edge are wide cross stitching (punto de cruz) embroidery borders featuring flowers. The embroidery yarns are multicolored; the flowers are done in shades of purple, yellow, red, pink and blue and the leaves in green. The embroidery border itself consists of two design lines, one more than twice as wide as the other. The wider line has a larger asymmetrical motif with meandering flowers of all colors mingling. The thinner line shows individual symmetrical flower motifs, one color at a time, alternating between all colors (except for center front and center back necklines, where a double flower appears in adjacent purple and yellow colors). Around the neckline the thin line is closest to the opening, surrounded by the thicker line. On the hem the thinner line lies nearest to the bottom, with the thicker line on top. The neckline and hem are finished with the same lace tape trim: a more intricate 1’’ wide, machine made, scalloped edge lace trim. The armhole openings have a thinner, simpler ½’’ eyelet trim. The huipil is made from one fabric piece folded in half widthwise and sewed on two sides. The embroidery along the bottom edge is on a separate fabric piece attached to the body. The huipil is machine sewn. Because of the small size of the armhole openings, it is probably for a child or teen.
