This is an unfinished quexquemitl composed of two off-white woven lienzos made of cotton. Each panel has been created on a backstrap loom using alternating bands of plain weave and open gauze weave, interspersed with puckered textures. The textile shows an expert use of four-selvage weaving, indicating complete loom-finished edges on all sides. The two rectangular panels are loosely joined at a right angle, a preparatory step before the final tailoring into the distinctive poncho-like quexquemitl form. The weaving features highly regular patterns of lace-like voids and puckers that lend the textile both breathability and ornamental complexity.Ethnography
