This Chinantec huipil is constructed of handwoven cotton in a plain weave gauze structure with three-lienzo, produced on a backstrap loom. The ground fabric is a natural white with openwork textures characteristic of daily-wear huipils from the region. The garment features complex counted-thread embroidery using red, blue, purple, orange, and green threads. The central motif includes peacock-like birds and stacked geometric forms, embroidered in dense red threadwork accented by vibrant multicolor pattern bands. Vertical seams are joined with an elaborately worked “randa” — a decorative joining band — executed in a counted-stitch technique. Brightly colored satin "listones" (ribbons) were likely once affixed to the neckline and side seams, a practice common to fiesta garments. These have since been removed or were never attached. The neckline has a modest square cut with signs of finishing having worn or been altered.Ethnography
