Scope and Content

Nelson Gilkey journal, including Civil War era. 6.75 x 8.25 cardboard covered notebook. It was originally used for records of the schooner Brilliant, starting in May, 1859 in Bangor, by Nelson Gilkey. The last date is in Sept.. 1859. Starting from the back, the book was used as a "Journal of events" beginning January 1, 1862 and running until August 23, 1862, with an entry for July 23, 1863. The journal records weather, farm work and funerals and marriages. Following the journal is a "Record of Marriages By me Nelson Gilkey" Covers 1859 to 1886. There are also several pages of financial records for 1862 and 1863. Nelson Gilkey comments on the death of David Philbrook at the Batlwe of Fair Oaks in the Civil War, and his July 4th entry is a condemnation of "Richmond ... the traitors capitol", the southern traitors and the Northern sympathisers.
