1) Cardboard covered notebook, 8" x 7" Inscription on first page: Records of Council No. 279 Organized Oct 18th 1854 By James Varney D.D.R. and kept by J.B Coombs Sect. includes names of original members and those admitted later, totalling c 125 by 1856 Is Council a form of Masonic Lodge? Mr. Varney was paid $12 for his sevices in organizing the council. This is a minute book and seems to record primarily elections to membership and initiation to first and second degrees "of this order." There is no mention of the name of the order. 2)Separately one page notes of meetings, payments, etc. pertaining to entries in the Account Book 3)A one-page report of expenses paid by the "Republican Society to William P Boardman Sr for Attending Maine State Convention holden at Portland July 8th 1856" ($7.00 for transportation & 2 days in Portland, room & board).
