Scope and Content

This collection of newspaper articles spans over two years of work for Islesboro natives from lobbying the State of Maine for a new ferry to the dedication and first use of the Governor Muskie, and all of the mishaps in between. Chronologically the first set of articles detail the attendance of Penobscot Bay "islanders" at scheduled debates, Legislative Highway Committee meetings, and other events and thier disappointment when the "house failed to take up the bill" in 1957. However many more articles in this collection highlight thier later success in procuring a new ferry boat as well as two new ferry terminals. Other articles mention, the scheduled arrival of the Governor Muskie, its arrival, its dedication, the sale of the old Governor Brann, and even a community fundraiser to guess the exact minute the first car would go aboard the new ferry.
